Streaming video to an iPad

One of the first things I researched – after my initial four hour long “ooh, nifty!“-phase – was streaming video to an iPad. The reason for this is that I want my media on demand, and we don’t have any cool Netflix, ABC player, or Hulu over here. I love encoders like Handbrake and Videomonkey, but encoding and synching to the iPad will take you more than half an hour for an hours worth of media.

Luckily, my quest didn’t take very long. You can quickly and easily stream media to your iPad with two applications; ServeToMe (for both Mac and PC) and StreamToMe. StreamToMe is an iPad / iPhone client for three dollars (€ 2,39) and ServeToMe is the accompanying streaming server.

It’s as easy as 1-2-3

  1. Download, Install & Start ServeToMe and select the folders you want to share
  2. Go to the App Store and get StreamToMe
  3. Take your iPad anywhere in range of your Wi-Fi, sit back and enjoy!

Update: If you’re a smart cookie and you want to stream your library from different locations, you can also use StreamToMe with a manual IP address or hostname. (you’ll need a large upstream capacity though, and probably some port forwarding knowledge)
